The tennis ball is one of the best tools for building retrieve drive in young gundogs — but it needs to be used carefully. The mistake most handlers make is letting the dog play with the ball freely, which turns it from a high-value reward into an ordinary object. Keep it out of reach between sessions. The ball only appears when you produce it, and it disappears again when the session ends.

For recall training, the sequence is simple: dog returns, you throw the ball. The retrieve becomes the reward for the recall, which builds both behaviours simultaneously.
