The goal is to use the fur wrap to establish confident, correct retrieve behaviour, then gradually transition back to plain canvas as the behaviour becomes reliable.
For toggle-gripping: position the wrap to cover the toggle end completely, leaving only the central body exposed. The dog has no choice but to grip in the middle. Reward every correct central carry enthusiastically. Once the dog is consistently gripping correctly on the wrapped dummy, introduce an unwrapped dummy and see if the behaviour transfers. Most dogs generalise quickly once the correct habit is established.
For canvas-resistant dogs: start every session with the wrapped dummy until retrieve drive is high and consistent, then introduce an unwrapped dummy as a second retrieve in the same session. The dog's drive from the first retrieve carries over to the second. Gradually shift the ratio until the dog is retrieving plain canvas as readily as fur.
