The Rabbit Ball is one of the best tools for getting a reluctant retriever started — but the way you introduce it matters. Don't throw it immediately. Put it on the ground and let your dog investigate it at their own pace. Most dogs will sniff, mouth, and pick it up within a minute or two, driven entirely by the scent. That first voluntary pick-up is the foundation everything else is built on.

For scent line work, roll the ball firmly along the ground for at least 15 metres before sending your dog. The longer the trail, the more the dog has to work their nose rather than just running to where they saw it land. Vary the line — curves, angles, through light cover — to build genuine scenting ability rather than just following a straight track.

Keep multiple colours in the bag and use them deliberately. White for marking work with young dogs. Natural or Ginger for scent lines. Black or Grey for blind retrieve practice where you want to reduce the visual cue. The colour choice is a training variable, not just an aesthetic one.
