Why We Recommend It

A crate-trained gundog has a significant advantage at shoots and trials — he settles quickly between drives, travels calmly, and arrives composed rather than over-stimulated. The Henry Wag Folding Fabric Travel Crate is the practical tool that makes this possible away from home. The zip assembly is genuinely fast and requires no tools, which matters when you’re setting up at a peg or in a shoot vehicle. The mesh panels on three sides keep the dog cool and allow him to observe without being overstimulated, and the cover flaps give you the option to settle him down when needed. The faux sheepskin pad is a nice comfort detail, and the carry case and ground pegs show that Henry Wag have thought through the full use case. Five sizes mean there’s a correct fit for every breed from cocker spaniel to giant breed.

Bailey Says 🐾

I have strong opinions about having my own space, and this crate provides exactly that. On shoot days, when there is a great deal of activity and excitement between drives, I appreciate having somewhere familiar and comfortable to settle. The sheepskin pad is excellent. The mesh panels allow me to observe proceedings without becoming unnecessarily involved, which I find helps me maintain the focused, professional demeanour appropriate to the occasion. Craig puts my crate up quickly — the zip system takes him about two minutes — and I walk straight in without being asked. This is, I think, the mark of a well-designed crate. 🐾

How To Use

Unpack from the carry case and unfold on a flat surface. Use the zip system to assemble the frame and panels — no tools required. Place the foam-insulated floor panel inside and add the sheepskin pad for comfort. Open the mesh door and allow your dog to investigate at his own pace before closing. Use the cover flaps to reduce visual stimulation when you need the dog to settle. For outdoor use on soft ground, use the included pegs to secure the base. To fold down, reverse the assembly process and pack into the carry case.

Care Guide

  • Brush out hair and debris after each use
  • Wipe fabric panels with a damp cloth for light soiling
  • Remove and wash the floor panel and sheepskin pad separately — check labels for wash temperature
  • Do not machine wash the full crate structure
  • Allow to dry fully before folding and storing
  • Check zip teeth periodically and clear of debris to maintain smooth operation
  • Store in the carry case in a dry location when not in use

Professional Insight

A crate-trained gundog is a significantly easier dog to manage at a shoot, trial or training day than one without this foundation. The crate provides a portable, familiar den that the dog associates with rest and safety — meaning that even in a highly stimulating environment with game, other dogs and unfamiliar people, the dog has a clearly defined off-switch. Handlers who invest in crate training early, using a consistent crate that travels with them, typically report that their dogs settle faster between drives, are less vocal, and are more focused when called to work. The fabric travel crate is the correct tool for a crate-trained dog in field conditions — lighter and faster to assemble than a metal crate, more protective and structured than a vehicle dog guard alone. The mesh panels and cover flaps are a deliberate design choice: mesh ventilation keeps the dog cool, and the cover option allows the handler to manage arousal level by controlling visual access to external stimulation.

Training Academy Tip 💡

Introduce the travel crate at home long before you need it in the field. Place it in your dog’s normal living space with the door open, pad and sheepskin inside, and allow him to investigate and choose to enter at his own pace. Feed meals inside the crate initially, then progress to closing the door for short periods while you remain present. Build duration gradually over two to three weeks until your dog settles calmly inside for one to two hours. Only then introduce it in field conditions. A dog that associates the crate with comfort and reward at home will transfer that association to the shoot or trial — a dog introduced to the crate for the first time on a busy shoot day will not. The investment in home crate training is the most important step in the process.

Complete Your Setup

Pair with the Henry Wag Boot and Bumper Protector to protect your boot beneath the crate, and the Henry Wag Noodle Mat for additional padding and moisture absorption. For a complete settling routine, add a Henry Wag faux sheepskin blanket for extra comfort on longer shoot days. Browse the full Henry Wag range on The Gundog Catalogue.

FAQs

Which size should I choose?

Measure your dog from nose to tail base and add 10–15cm — this is the minimum internal length required. Your dog should be able to stand, turn around and lie fully stretched. Cocker spaniels typically suit Small or Medium; Labradors and golden retrievers typically suit Large or XL; larger breeds may require Giant. When in doubt, size up.

Is it suitable for car boot use?

Yes — provided the crate dimensions fit your boot space. Measure your boot interior before selecting a size. Pair with the Henry Wag Boot and Bumper Protector beneath the crate for complete boot protection.

Can I leave my dog unsupervised in this crate?

This crate is not designed for unsupervised use with a dog that is not crate trained. A crate-trained dog that is comfortable in a fabric crate can be left for appropriate periods. A dog that has not been crate trained, or that chews or scratches when anxious, can damage a fabric crate and potentially escape or injure himself. Use a metal wire crate for unsupervised use with dogs that are not yet crate trained.

How quickly does it assemble?

The zip assembly system takes approximately two minutes once you are familiar with it. No tools are required. It is designed to be quick enough to assemble at a shoot or trial without disrupting your preparation.
