Recall is the most important behaviour a dog can learn, and a long line is the most important tool for teaching it. The long line is the single most important piece of equipment for building a reliable recall — but it only works if you use it correctly. The most common mistake is using the lead to reel the dog in when they don't respond to the recall cue. This teaches the dog that not coming back results in being pulled back, which is a very different lesson from coming back being the best possible choice.

The correct approach: call once, clearly. If the dog doesn't respond, make yourself more interesting — crouch down, turn away, make a noise. Let the dog choose to come back. When they do, reward with the highest-value treat you have and genuine enthusiasm. The long line is there to prevent the dog from disappearing, not to pull them back. Every recall that happens because the dog chose to come is worth ten that happened because they were pulled.

The progression from long line to off-lead is gradual: start by dropping the lead on the ground and letting the dog drag it. They feel the same weight and connection, but you're no longer holding it. Practice recall with the lead dragging. When that's reliable, shorten the lead progressively until you're working with just the handle. Then remove it entirely. This transition, done properly, produces a recall that holds under real-world distraction.
