Introduce the launcher gradually. Many handlers make the mistake of firing the launcher at close range on the first session — the report is significantly louder than a blank pistol and can startle a dog that isn't prepared for it.

Start with the dog at distance — 50-100 metres away — and fire the launcher while the dog is focused on something else. Let them see the dummy land and send them for the retrieve. Over several sessions, gradually reduce the distance between the dog and the launcher until they are comfortable with the report at close range.

The launcher's report is also a useful tool for steadiness training: a dog that breaks on the shot is a dog that needs more steadiness work before the launcher is introduced. Use the launcher as a test of steadiness as well as a marking aid.
